NMC Horizon Report 2016: Charting Tech Ed’s Future

We’re always excited when the New Media Consortium – an organization dedicated to helping spread and improve tech-related education – releases its annual Horizon Report.

The NMC’s Horizon Report is like a crystal ball, gazing into tech’s future.

The NMC’s Horizon Report, true to its name, scans the future and predicts the coming state of tech education in America. What makes the report especially useful is that each tech education trend it cites is put on a timeline, so the educators who value the Report can see when that trend is really going to be felt in the American classroom.

We encourage everyone with a vested interest in U.S. education – which is to say, everybody – to check out the 2016 Horizon Report. We were especially excited about three parts of the Report:

BLENDED LEARNING

We’re use our DMA Online courses to achieve blended learning, as mentioned in the Horizon Report.

What it Is: Using multiple education methods and delivery systems.
2016 Horizon Report Says: “Blended learning integrates both online and face-to-face modalities to create a cohesive learning experience, providing learners with flexibility and support.” (P.18, “Increasing Use of Blended Learning Designs”)
At DMA: We use our DMA Online courses to help our incoming students get completely up to speed and ready for the educational experience of a lifetime. The classes are inexpensive, entertaining and chockfull of necessary course fundamentals.

TECH TIME OUT

The NMC thinks kids need regular breaks from tech. At DMA, we couldn’t agree more.

What it Is: Kids need to take regular breaks from tech.
2016 Horizon Report Says: “A number of progressive universities are emphasizing outdoor education as a means of providing students with more sensory and hands-on experiences.” (P.31, “Balancing Our Connected and Unconnected Lives”)
At DMA: For years now, DMA tech camps have been structured to include regularly scheduled recreation breaks. These give our students a chance to go outdoors, have fun and socially interact with other campers. It’s all part of creating a perfectly balanced camp day.

VIRTUAL REALITY

The Horizon Report cites Google Cardboard, which we use in our VR tech camps.

What it Is: Eye-popping visual technology that’s changing game design.
2016 Horizon Report Says: “Google Cardboard presents students with the opportunity to construct their own VR content, and more educators are using it because of its accessibility and flexibility.” (P.40, “Augmented and Virtual Reality”)
At DMA: Students love our virtual reality tech camps, because they not only get to experience VR, they get to design game levels for use with VR. Add in getting to use the Oculus Rift and getting to learn Unity, and you’ve got an incredible tech camp experience.
