DMA Success Story: Master Gamer Adam McLaughlin

Adam McLaughlin is the type of video gamer who’s a student of the whole history of video games, and you can see it in his home game room, which boasts umpteen different classic game consoles – including the original 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System.

This past summer, this 13-year-old master gamer decided to go “under the hood” and find out what makes today’s hottest games tick. He spent early July at DMA’s summer tech camps at University of Chicago, studying Minecraft modding, picking up Java programming and exploring API Forge.

Adam really enjoyed his time in instructor Omar Sokoya’s class, and confirmed it by giving DMA the highest possible score for overall camp experience on an end-of-camp survey.

What did you actually create at DMA tech camp?
A mod for the game Minecraft.

How exactly did it make you feel when you completed your final project?
It felt like I had succeeded and contributed to the community.

What were the most fun things about attending DMA tech camp?
Programming and making friends.

Did you make friends at DMA camp this summer?
Yes, I made one.

Do you think you’ll use what you learned at DMA when you’re back at your regular school?
Not necessarily at school, but I will on my own time.

Would you suggest DMA tech camps to your best friends and their parents?
Yes.

Were your parents pleased with your DMA experience?
Yes.
