How to Download the Music of SXSW

By Ryan Koss

Since 1987, South by Southwest has brought the latest in music, film and interactive technologies center stage in Austin, Texas. This year, a record number of musicians and acts took the stage and made this year’s SXSW one of the most memorable.

From the backup singers for HOLYCHILD to the amazing performance by electronic music production up-and-comer Shlohmo, there were some incredible artists at SXSW this year. And while Kanye was a no-show, artists like Kate Boy showed that if you want to create dance music, you just have to put your heart into it.

How to Hear SXSW 2015
Couldn’t make it out to Austin this year? Or maybe you were hanging out with Digital Media Academy at the SXSWedu Playground and didn’t have a chance to catch Spoon or 2 Chainz? No matter what artist you missed, the folks at SXSW have collected all the songs from the 2015 SXSW for download.

For anyone who is looking for inspiration to create electronic music, the free 8.4-gigabyte download features more than 1,200 MP3s for your listening pleasure. The collection marks the largest amount of music from SXSW to ever be made available for free.

What is a Torrent?
SXSW has uploaded the music into downloadable files, called torrents. Torrents allow you to download bits of data from other users, often referred to as peer-to-peer computing, or P2P. Torrents are typically the easiest way to download large files at high speeds.

There is a common belief that torrents are illegal by nature. This misconception is due to users who choose to share copyrighted material, such as music, movies and software.
