In a galaxy not so far away, Star Wars fans got to glimpse the future of the “Star Wars” film franchise.
First at a shareholder meeting in San Francisco, California, where the Walt Disney Company announced Star Wars: Rogue One, and then at the Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, California, where a short snippet of the film was shown.
Star Wars: Rogue One will be the first stand-alone “Star Wars” film (although, technically, that honor actually goes to 2008’s 3D animated film The Clone Wars).
The film will take place before Star Wars: A New Hope and follow the elite group as they try to steal the plans to the Death Star. (Spoiler Alert: If you’ve seen Star Wars: A New Hope, you know they were successful…) The Rogue One announcement ended months of speculation that included everyone from Yoda to Han Solo as possible headliners for the first stand-alone film.
Rogue Squadron: A Brief History
If you’ve watched the original “Star Wars” films, you’ll remember Rogue One as the callsign of the leader of Rogue Squadron.
Considered the Blue Angels of the “Star Wars” universe, these pilots flew X-wings, Snowspeeders and practically anything else with an engine. These were the guys that had Luke’s back as he made his run on the Death Star.
For many “Star Wars” fans, Rogue Squadron represented the best of “Star Wars”: No romantic back-story about Han and Leia, no Skywalker or Jedi mumbo-jumbo. Just straight-up, intense battles that determine the fate of the galaxy.
Could this fleet of X-wings be part of Rogue Squadron? They make an appearance in the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer.
While Rogue Squadron wandered in and out of the original “Star Wars” movies as a supporting character, it was the comic book series Star Wars: X-wing Rogue Squadron, released in the mid 90s by Dark Horse Comics, that really fleshed them out.
Video gamers who want to learn game design should look no further than the Nintendo N64 Rogue Squadron. Arguably one of the best “Star Wars” video games, the game let gamers play as one of the squadron pilots. LEGO® sets have also helped fans relive the adventures of the rebel starfighters.
Who is Rogue One?
In the past, the role of Rogue One has been filled by Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles. With the casting of Felicity Jones, we’re betting the new leader of Rogue Squadron may be a girl.
Star Wars: Rogue One will release on December 16, 2016. The film will be directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla).
The Rogue One storyline came from John Knoll, Industrial Light & Magic’s Chief Creative Officer and visual effects wiz. Knoll worked on the “Star Wars” prequels as well as special effects for Star Trek and Pirates of the Caribbean.
