Top Programming Schools

By Phill Powell

Pick any industry and you can bet that computer programming is now a big part of it. In fact, computer programming is at the forefront of the technology revolution, changing and influencing every major part of modern life.

Stanford University’s Programming Department is considered one of the best in the country.

Computer programming courses and computer science degrees are offered at thousands of colleges and universities across America, but which schools have the very best programs? We were wondering the same thing, so we researched lists compiled by independent resources like U.S. News & World Report and others to determine the top programming schools:

School: Carnegie Mellon University
Location: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Reason It Ranks: Carnegie Mellon offers BA, master’s and Ph.D degrees in computer science. U.S. News & World Report and the Wall Street Journal are just a few of the analysts who give this university high marks year after year because of its School of Computer Science.

School: Stanford University
Location: Stanford, California
Reason It Ranks: A big part of Stanford’s comp sci success comes from its very active, field-based research activities. Stanford University’s programs complement its current position as the finest university in the U.S., according to recent rankings.

School: Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Location: Cambridge, Massachusetts
Reason It Ranks: MIT is almost synonymous with computer development, which it has actively pursued since World War II. MIT students developed some of the earliest video games (Spacewar!) and the university is also home of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.

School: University of California, Berkeley
Location: Berkeley, California
Reason It Ranks: Apple’s Steve Wozniak and Google’s Eric Schmidt graduated from UC Berkeley, considered the most selective university in the U.S. It’s no surprise that students come to UC Berkeley’s programs with the goal of becoming a tech entrepreneur.

Programming Yourself for Success
These undergrad programs in computer programming are the nation’s finest. But what if you’re not a high school senior heading off to college? Digital Media Academy offers great programming camps for kids and mobile game programming courses for teens at many locations, including Stanford and UC Berkeley.

Imagine it: Learning how to design cool apps and make mobile video games while at UC Berkeley. Or explore programming as you learn Java during a hands-on, two-week learning experience.
