Summer Camp and Other Great Things to Do in Philadelphia & Swarthmore

By Phill Powell

This summer, the perfect family vacation can become even better, when it’s structured around one or more of the kids spending one or two weeks at Digital Media Academy’s tech camp on the scenic Swarthmore campus. It’s an ideal summer vacation opportunity—especially when you consider that Swarthmore is only 11 miles southwest of historic and happening Philadelphia.

Summer 2013 will be exploding with chances for great family fun in Philadelphia. Meanwhile, DMA will be busy at Swarthmore, as it brings cutting-edge tech education to the beautiful Pennsylvania campus.

A Sterling History of Excellence
Swarthmore College was founded in 1864 by Quaker interests who wanted to create a school “…at which an education may be obtained equal to that of the best institutions of learning in our country.” Swarthmore has pursued that goal vigorously ever since, as its respected reputation shows.

For example, in 2012 “U.S. News & World Report” ranked Swarthmore the nation’s third best liberal arts college. That same year, “The Princeton Review” awarded the school the highest score possible for the selectiveness of its admission process. With Swarthmore’s reputation for excellence, it’s no wonder that 90 percent of Swarthmore grads attend grad school, or that more than 20 percent of them go on to earn a doctoral degree.

A Progressive Place for a Progressive Program
Digital Media Academy was attracted by Swarthmore’s impeccable academic credentials, as well as its wooded campus—nestled within a scenic 300-acre arboretum that contains more than 4,000 types of ornamental plants.

Swarthmore’s lush campus is set inside a massive, 300-acre arboretum.

DMA also liked Swarthmore’s progressive reputation. For example, Swarthmore’s Science Center was the first undergrad science facility in the U.S. to receive the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification.

This summer, kids and teens at Swarthmore will learn how to follow their creative passions by mastering today’s coolest technology at DMA tech camps at Swarthmore. Whether they’re interested in digital filmmaking, game design, app development, robotics, 3D art or animation, Web design, music production, programming or digital photography, there’s something for everyone at DMA. The expert, hands-on instruction comes from technology educators with industry experience, and is delivered using today’s leading software programs.

Tourist Destination Supreme
With world-class accommodations and first-rate tourist attractions, Philadelphia makes an outstanding family vacation destination. Visit Philadelphia, stay only 11 miles away from your child, and enjoy:

  • Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell – The epicenter of U.S. Revolution history. Where “Liberty!” was declared.
  • Ben Franklin Life & Legacy Museum – Newly opened this summer. A riveting look at the founding father, one of America’s greatest geniuses.
  • The Philadelphia Zoo – The zoo has a kids education program that’s getting rave reviews.
  • “Spy: Secret World of Espionage” – This wild exhibit at the Franklin Institute features more than 200 cool spy artifacts.
  • “Big Bugs” Display – Amazing display at the Morris Arboretum uses plants to mimic the look of a praying mantis, dragonfly, spider, etc.
  • Philadelphia Phillies – For fans of Major League Baseball, the hometown favorites have five different home games during DMA’s 2013 camp season.
  • Sylvester Stallone came to “Philly” to make his epic acting breakout as a prize fighter. No visit to the Philadelphia Museum of Art would be complete without seeing the “Rocky” statue, inspired by the boxing training sequence from the 1976 classic movie “Rocky” and following in the footsteps of Rocky by climbing the steps of the East Entrance staircase. The Rocky Steps are a pop culture and tourist destination.
